At home with Sally Rhys-Jones
Tell us all about you…
I’m an interior architect - I spend my days on building sites creating peoples dream homes. We design everything from the layouts of the home down to all the lighting, joinery details, finishes selections etc. When I’m not at work I’m happiest doing anything outside. Also known to be a fan of 90s rap music, a few gin & tonics & I probably swear too much!
You have an impressive number of interior projects under your belt, but how have you approached designing your own home?
When we were looking for our home, we wanted something with character - way more important to me than having a huge space. It’s a small beach cottage with a very relaxed breezy vibe. I like to keep things pretty simple at home - less is more. Nothing is too precious - I like to not worry about things getting ruined.
What would be your dream design project?
A small luxury resort on a remote Indonesian island where I would use all kinds of beautiful stones and have amazing tropical landscaping that blended through the interiors. Or perhaps channel all of that into a small local day spa? Now there is an idea!
I have had a few dreamy projects this year - a farm house in Berry with all kinds of gorgeous materials - marble sinks, Moroccan tiles, polished plaster, terracotta, concrete & brass tapware. And a family home in Bronte that is the quintessential beach house.
Where do you find inspiration?
Travel generally - seeing how different materials / colours / techniques are done in other countries. Also how people live & what is important to each individual client. I love to design spaces that really enhance how people live. I take a lot of time to really get to know people before we start the design & during the process the design often evolves as we get to know the client better.
What is your favourite Palm Beach fragrance and why?
You can never go past coconut & lime – it’s an instant tropical holiday!
I’m also loving the clove & sandalwood for a more masculine vibe.
Any exciting projects coming up (that you’re allowed to reveal!)?
Hopefully some more work on my own house actually. Working with all my favourite trades & suppliers should be a treat! I'm sure to be my own worst client 😉
